The newly inaugurated Barbuda International Airport, which opened on October 3, 2024, marks a significant advancement for Antigua and Barbuda's connectivity and tourism. The opening of the airport is expected to catalyze the growth of stay-over tourism, with arrivals having already increased by 17 percent in the first eight months of 2024. This reflects the government's vision to transform Barbuda into a luxurious travel destination.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, Charles Fernandez, emphasized that the new airport is essential for attracting luxury travelers and private jet owners. Additionally, the island is set to welcome 23 luxury cruise ship calls this winter, bringing over 5,000 cruise passengers to experience its unique offerings.
The $14 million facility features a 6,100-foot runway, which is substantially longer and wider than the previous Codrington Airport, allowing for larger aircraft, including private jets. The airport is equipped with a full LED runway lighting system that enables regular night landings and includes a modern Fixed Base Operator (FBO) terminal, designed to accommodate high-end travelers seeking exclusive experiences on Barbuda's renowned beaches.
