AI for Good: How McKinsey is Driving Social Impact Through Career Opportunities and Humanitarian Aid

AI is transforming industries and addressing global challenges, and McKinsey & Company is at the forefront of this progress. Through its QuantumBlack AI arm, McKinsey has developed over 600 AI use cases aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on areas like job placement and disaster relief. One such initiative is the company’s partnership with Generation, a nonprofit facilitating career transitions, showcases AI’s potential to enhance employability. McKinsey’s AI-driven tool matches graduates’ skills with job vacancies, streamlining processes and improving career outcomes. Following successful pilots in the UK and Mexico, this tool will expand to 17 countries by 2025, ensuring compliance with global data standards like GDPR.

In addition to supporting job placement, McKinsey is also applying AI to enhance disaster relief efforts through its work with DISHA (Data Insights for Social and Humanitarian Action). Supported by QuantumBlack, this project utilizes AI for rapid damage assessment through satellite imagery and real-time socio-economic mapping, enabling more targeted and timely humanitarian responses. The damage assessment tool helps humanitarian organizations evaluate large areas quickly, while the socio-economic mapping tool ensures aid is directed to those most in need. These tools have proven effective in disaster-prone regions like the Philippines, accelerating resource mobilization and aiding vulnerable populations. By fostering partnerships and adhering to responsible AI practices, McKinsey is not only delivering immediate solutions but also creating sustainable frameworks for collaborative action, highlighting the transformative potential of AI for social good.
