While Montauk may have been founded as a fishing village, to have a truly enjoyable stay in the tiny hamlet at the tip of Long Island, this chic farmhouse is an excellent option.
Ask anyone what they know of Montauk, and they will likely say two things: fishing and tourism. And they would be correct on both counts. Located just 20 miles off the Connecticut coast, Montauk is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York state, and no less than ESPN itself has called it The Surf Fishing Capital of the World. In fact, twice as many saltwater fishing records are held by anglers from Montauk than by anglers from any other fishing port in the entire world.
But fishing is not all that makes Montauk special. The picturesque town is home to many one-of-a-kind shops, and one can easily while away hours and even entire days eating and shopping. Step away from the downtown and plenty of more active pastimes vie for one’s attention as well, from beachcombing to kayaking, surfing, and hiking.
Pack a camera and binoculars and head to Montauk Point State Park during the winter for excellent seal watching walks, while summer season brings live music to the town's pubs and cafes. And Hither Hills State Park provides access to a 40-acre freshwater pond, ocean swimming, and camp sites.
After a day packed with activities, it’s important to have a comfortable pad to retire to. And few spots in Montauk are as luxurious as this large, inviting farmhouse. Located right on Lake Montauk, this beautiful, 4,000-square-foot home has a great backyard perfect for families of all sizes (and a few friends as well). It would be easy to spend a more laid-back day lying in a lounge chair, sunbathing on the lush grass, or relaxing in the gorgeous pool and hot tub.
There’s plenty of room for large groups inside as well, with four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a sizable, stylish, and very modern open concept kitchen/living room/dining room area. The only drawbacks of the downstairs are the relatively low ceilings and the limited natural light — but this can be easily remedied with a retreat to the spacious sunroom adjacent.
The upstairs is equally chic, with well-appointed bedrooms and spacious bathrooms. While the entertainment system may be challenging to use, some of the mattresses a little old, the bedframes a bit creaky, and the thumps of the air conditioner relatively noticeable at night, there are two lovely extra lounge rooms, one complete with a full bar, for relaxing or entertaining.
Best of all, the home’s location leaves very little to be desired. Just across the street is the fabulous Crow’s Nest restaurant, featuring wonderfully creative dishes and (of course) the freshest seafood. The house is just a short eight-minute bike ride to Ditch Plains Beach, as well, and an even shorter car ride to town. And did we mention the lake view from the upstairs?
Overall, there’s a lot to recommend this property and many features that make it great fun for a group of friends, but for $1,000/day, it is unlikely to impress the truly discerning traveler.
