The Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, a newer boutique outpost of the prestigious hotel group, has recently opened its doors in London, marking the UK debut of Michelin-starred chef Akira Back. This highly anticipated opening was delayed from its initial announcement in early 2022 to its eventual launch in June 2024. The hotel features a 148-cover restaurant, a bar, and will soon include an exclusive chef’s table restaurant. Back, known for his global culinary empire with 28 locations in cities such as Paris, Dubai, and Singapore, brings his east-meets-west fusion cuisine to this new venture. His signature dishes, including the popular tuna pizza and various sushi rolls, highlight his innovative approach, while the Dynamite Lobster stands out as a London exclusive.
Back’s restaurant, designed by Tokyo-based firm Curiosity, features elements representing fire and light, creating a contrasting ambiance between the ABar Lounge and the main dining room. The dining space includes a sushi station, private dining rooms, and artwork by Back’s mother, Young Hee Back. Despite minor teething issues, the staff’s enthusiasm and the restaurant’s luxurious setting promise a memorable dining experience. Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, with Back at the helm, aims to deliver a blend of refined luxury and culinary excellence in the heart of London.
