Even though travel is limited these days due to the coronavirus pandemic, many people are seeking out vacation rentals not only to get away, but to socially distance from others.
Home-sharing has been on the rise for few years and AirBnB is the trendsetter in this industry with over 7 million property listings across the world. Despite its popularity, AirBnB isn’t the only platform for booking short-term rentals. Since its launch, several great alternatives have popped up that are giving the go-to home rental site a run for its money.
Whether you haven’t found what you’re looking for on AirBnB, or just want to try something new, it is nice to have more options out there; although it is always good practice to shop around before booking a stay. Choosing accommodation when going somewhere new or different is a big decision that can make or break a holiday and trying a different service might just lead you to a hidden gem.
The following AirBnB’s alternatives are smaller than AirBnB, and sometimes more specialized. But whether you are looking for tiny homes, luxurious villas, family-friendly condos, designer apartments, road trips, or just a place to crash, these sites will help you start planning your next adventure.
Sonder
Founded in 2012, Sonder is different from AirBnB in that they lease or own every property they list. They renovate them before renting out, manage them directly, and ensure that every property meets their standards. Guests will experience the convenience of a hotel-like stay with the vibe of an apartment rental, in trendy neighborhoods in popular cities. The app enables you to check-in, request fresh towels, and even get dinner recommendations in your area. You can also call or text the 24/7 concierge service for anything you may need. With mid-range to luxury properties in over 35 cities and 7 countries, and over 5,000 listings worldwide, there are plenty of choices either for short- or long-term stays. The average price is $189 per night and guests can enjoy 40% off on stays of 14 nights or more.
Plum Guide
Based in London and launched in 2015, the Plum Guide is the Michelin Guide for vacation homes, listing holiday properties in several popular destinations across Europe, the U.S., and the U.K. Most property applicants are rejected, with an acceptance rate of only 3% and every single property is put through a grueling and multistage vetting process obsessing over every last detail from shower pressure and WIFI speed, to sociability of the space and linen quality. There is no way to make a bad choice, and the “Home Truths” section will give you a heads up on small details for full transparency. A dedicated concierge team is also at your disposal seven days a week to assist you with everything you may need during your stay.
Plans Matter
If you are an architecture enthusiast looking for modern designed vacation rentals, you are in the right place. Founded in 2016 by two architecture graduates who met at university, Plans Matter features a selection of magnificent properties and hotels around the world; places that have an architectural intention and a story to tell, designed by renowned architects. The site includes profiles of international architects, links to the sites where guests can book the properties, activities and tips suitable to the location, as well as awards won by the experts for the specific house. Even though it focuses on high-end rentals, the properties have been specially chosen to suit every type of traveler and match almost any kind of budget.
Kids & Coe
Created in 2013, Kids & Coe lists hand-picked places around the world suitable for children, to make family travel as easy as ABC. The rentals indicate plenty of information with paragraphs on “Perks for the Parents,” “Why Kids Love It,” “Things to Know,” and “Style Notes.” Filters also allow families to search for specific amenities that cater to different ages. Some homes even come with additional perks including babysitting services, nannies, or personal chefs. Parents will have less to pack thanks to kid-ready houses, insider tips from other parents, and lots of family amenities like cribs, strollers, baby monitors, highchairs, toys, books, beach gear, and much more.
Yonder
Launched just before the pandemic, this nature-focused site is a bit like AirBnB for getting outside. It connects travelers and locals alike with hands-on experiences, and features a variety of overnight stays and activities at farms, vineyards, ranches, and other nature-immersive properties. Experiences like horseback riding, mushroom hunting, birdwatching, and whitewater rafting are only a few examples of some of the unique activities offered. Each property and activity is owned and managed by a so-called “Steward” (ranchers, farmers, vintners) who is an expert of the environment. These stays are more than a place to crash, they are life-changing moments. According to the founder, the “purpose is to nurture the kinship between people, plants, animals, and all living things.”
Outdoorsy
Founded in 2015, Outdoorsy is the AirBnB on wheels operating in 14 countries with more than 50,000 unique vehicles to rent. The site lists RVs, campervans, travel trailers, Airtop vehicles, sprinters, and other outdoor adventure vehicles for the entire family. The platform connects their amazing owners to guests who want to try living in an RV while on vacation. Sleep in your bucket list locations, cook for yourself, decide where to go, and generally have a flexible approach to your trip. The package comes with free roadside assistance, help 24/7, delivery or pick-up services, and information about campgrounds and attractions. Thanks to the partnership with Kampgrounds of America, renters also receive discounted access to KOA’s 520 properties across North America.
Onefinestay
A bit older and now part of Accor Group, this luxury rental site is still a must-check. It features a collection of upscale vacation properties called “unhotels” in the most desirable resort destinations and cities worldwide. Only 1 in 10 homes make the cut for inclusion on this exclusive platform. Onefinestay may not own the properties they list but they do manage the entire booking process and guest stay, including tailored amenities and 24/7 concierge service. Guests also get offered access to listings from locals and have the option to add several services such as grocery deliveries, a private chef, babysitting, and spa treatments.
