It’s been four decades since the days of Studio 54 and since then Ian Schrager has successfully evolved into a multifaceted creative and business icon. His latest venture is Edition Hotels, a modern boutique concept developed in partnership with the Marriott. An ambitious rollout of 100 hotels is planned across the world, but is Schrager living up to his name with the first set of locations?
The Edition New York is in an upscale location at 5 Madison Ave – across from Credit Suisse and the world renowned restaurant 11 Madison Ave. The interior is thoughtfully laid out although the stair sets on either side of the entry foyer present a challenge to those with luggage they are handling themselves.
While one can understand how the lobby and bar were positioned and laid out to maximize the space available in the smallish footprint, it lacked that open vibe and festive energy one would expect to find in the sleek motif Schrager is attempting.
Edition does succeed with its service and its rooms. The staff is very attentive with a consistent positive attitude and fast, for even the most impatient New Yorker. Entering the room, one is impressed with how spacious they made limited square footage feel. A cozy bench and light wood table is a perfect eating spot while the tall windows give a clear view of Madison Ave and the luxury apartments across the way.
There are clearly some Asian and Scandinavian influences with the serene lines, light colors and strategic lighting along with minimalist bathrooms and open showers. All in all, Schrager’s latest venture is good not great. Fortunately, he has some time to tweak the model as his rollout continues.
