New Online Passport Renewal Program Simplifies Process for Eligible U.S. Travelers

The US State Department has launched a beta test of an online passport renewal program aimed at streamlining the renewal process for eligible travelers residing within the United States. With the help of this new program, those whose passports were granted between 2009 and 2015 can renew them online, provided they do not need to change their name or birthdate. Applicants must also possess the capability to upload their own passport photo as part of the online submission.

Upon submission of the online application, the current passport of the traveler will be immediately canceled, emphasizing that applicants with imminent international travel plans should refrain from using this online service. The fee for renewing a passport online is $130, and payment can be made using a credit card. Processing times for routine service are estimated at six to eight weeks, excluding mailing times, though expedited options are not available through the online test phase. Travelers requiring urgent renewal are advised to schedule appointments at passport centers for expedited processing, with resources such as a digital guide available to assist in navigating the renewal process.
