Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. travelers, along with those from Australia and Canada, will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the UK. The application portal, which officially opened on November 27, 2024, allows travelers to apply via the UK ETA mobile app or website. The process is typically quick, with most applications approved on the same day; however, travelers should allow up to 72 hours for approval to avoid last-minute issues. The ETA will cost $12, is valid for two years, and grants permission for multiple stays of up to six months.
This new system is part of the UK government's broader plan to fully digitize its borders by the end of 2025. The ETA will function similarly to the U.S. ESTA system, offering digital permission to travel without a full visa. It is mandatory for all non-European travelers, including those in transit, to obtain an ETA. This system will gradually roll out, with European travelers required to apply starting April 2, 2025. Applicants must provide a valid passport, a digital photo, and travel details, along with payment for the application fee.
