Voaara, a new barefoot luxury resort, is set to open in September 2024 on the island of Sainte-Marie (Nosy Boraha) off the northeast coast of Madagascar. This innovative resort, designed by South African-Chilean architect Luis F. Mira, will initially feature eight bungalows and one three-bedroom villa, with plans for a total of 45 accommodations through a phased launch. The resort aims to introduce a community-led concept to the region, emphasizing local materials, reclaimed wood, and infinity pools. Voaara will also include five dining outlets, of which two opened in August 2024, and a spa planned for later in the year.
Sainte-Marie, once a base for pirates, is renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches and as a prime location for observing the humpback whale migration from June to October. Voaara intends to employ at least 80% of its personnel from the local community in order to promote the preservation of local traditions and culture. Owner Philippe Kjellgren and his wife are dedicated to supporting local institutions and charitable organizations, thereby guaranteeing that the region will be relished for future generations.
