Lodge & Dine awarded La Serre a 5-star rating after a visit evaluating the full dining experience.
Set inside The Vanguard hotel, La Serre seems to take its visual cues more from a conservatory than a traditional brasserie. The dining room is bright and glass-lined, with greenery and natural light replacing the darker, heavier atmosphere common to many French restaurants. The room suits a menu shaped by Brittany and classic French technique.
The meal opens with gougères served warm, their airy centers enriched by truffle butter and a dusting of Gruyère. The croquettes are strong still, with a crisp panko crust giving way to a smooth filling of rosemary ham and bechamel, sharpened by a whole grain mustard aioli.
Texture carries much of the middle of the menu. The Parisian gnocchi stays light even under black truffle cream, while the artichoke frites use lemon zest and herbs to cut through the richness of the accompanying truffle aioli. The Brussels sprouts hold their place, with truffle honey bringing a salty-sweet finish.
The burrata plate stays on the fresher side of the menu, pairing the cheese with grilled asparagus and confit tomatoes, where toasted pine nuts and lemon zest add some necessary crunch and brightness. For the mains, the kitchen’s expertise with protein is obvious. The beef short ribs are fork-tender and deeply braised, served with a reduction that suggests real patience on the stove. The roasted branzino is handled just as precisely, arriving with crisped skin while the fish underneath stays moist.
The wine list stays relatively compact, with a curated selection that fits the food. A glass of Tenuta di Arceno brings enough firm structure to stand up to the short ribs. Dessert is just as well handled: the profiteroles have a firm pastry shell and cool cream, while the pot de crème is dense, smooth, and served at a temperature that allows the chocolate’s depth to come through.
Staff display a clear understanding of the menu, and the pacing gives each course enough room without slowing the meal. La Serre is strongest when its setting and its cooking work in tandem: the room stays bright and open, and the cooking is just as measured.
