Montecito, CA Series: Little Mountain Brings the Farm Closer to the Fire

Lodge & Dine awarded Little Mountain a 5-star rating for its wood-fired cooking and a dining room that feels more like a home than a high-end restaurant.

Little Mountain opened in Montecito late last year in a Spanish Colonial-style space built around terracotta tile, high ceilings, and a large custom hearth. Led by Chef Diego Moya, whose past kitchens include L’Arpège in Paris and Casa Mono in New York, the restaurant centers on wood-fired cooking and ingredients from nearby farms. The room is simple but beautiful, with terracotta tiles and high ceilings. Despite the occasional celebrity sighting, the vibe is grounded. On a recent visit, Moya was moving between the fire and the dining room, personally dropping off plates and talking about where the ingredients came from.

The meal began with the hiramasa. The raw fish was firm and clean, brightened by a satsuma aguachile that added a sharp, citrus kick without taking over. Beef tartare followed with snap peas and asparagus, which brought crunch and sweetness to the finely cut beef.

From the hearth, the Mt. Lassen trout arrived with charred alliums and wild mushrooms. The skin was crisp, the meat stayed moist, and the mushrooms gave the dish an earthy base. The strip steak came with heirloom carrots and wild sage, which released a savory, herbal scent at the table. The koshihikari rice with sesame butter was the strongest side, rich and nutty enough to stand on its own.

Even the smaller plates are memorable. The grilled radishes with hazelnut and clothbound cheddar had a unique bitterness that was balanced by the sharp, aged cheese. For dessert, the tuxpeño corn cake was dense and moist, topped with loquat and candied citrus for a floral finish.

The beverage program, curated by Hayden Felice, leans into low-intervention producers. A glass of Grenache from Brij Wines in San Luis Obispo was particularly well-balanced, offering enough fruit to stand up to the wood-fired meats without feeling heavy.

Service was informative and moved at a steady clip. Staff could discuss the farms behind specific ingredients without making the explanations feel rehearsed.

In less than a year, Little Mountain has already won over the Central Coast and the Michelin Guide. Its 5-star rating comes down to a simple formula: excellent ingredients, a great wine list, and a space that actually feels like a home.
