The Bahamas Series: Katsuya at Baha Mar, A Lively Take on Modern Japanese Dining

Lodge & Dine announces a 3.5-star rating for Katsuya after a day’s visit evaluating the guest experience. The restaurant delivered consistently across its Japanese culinary execution, service efficiency, and energetic dining atmosphere.

Set within Baha Mar, Katsuya is headed by master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi, whose approach balances Japanese tradition with contemporary California influence. The menu leans confidently into sushi and robata classics while incorporating fresh Bahamian ingredients, creating a lineup that feels familiar yet regionally grounded.

Inside, it establishes a sleek, modern tone without feeling overly formal. Warm wood floors, clean-lined tables, and a central sushi counter anchor the space, while soft lighting and subtle metallic accents add depth as the evening progresses. It feels social and contemporary, attracting couples, groups of friends, and well-dressed travelers who appreciate a stylish but approachable setting.

The culinary program is where consistency becomes the defining strength. Starters arrive promptly, beginning with spicy edamame tossed in shichimi pepper, sriracha, and Maldon sea salt, delivering a satisfying balance of heat and savoriness. The Katsuya ceviche layers assorted sashimi with truffle oil and umami citrus, offering a clean, aromatic profile that highlights the freshness of the fish. Spicy tuna crispy rice remains a crowd favorite—grilled rice providing crunch beneath rich tuna tartare and green serrano. Alongside, lobster and shrimp gyoza paired with black garlic ponzu add depth and sweetness, while the short rib bao bun stands out for its tender, slow-braised meat offset by bamboo aioli and pickled onion.

Main courses maintain that momentum. The teriyaki beef tenderloin, finished with sesame and scallions, exceeds expectations with its tenderness and restrained sweetness. Chicken wings, though straightforward, are well-executed and satisfying. The nigiri platter is particularly solid, presenting an assortment of eight different fish that showcase clean cuts and balanced seasoning. For dessert, the mochi-doki—premium ice cream wrapped in chewy mochi rice cake—provides a playful yet indulgent close to the meal.

The bar program complements the menu rather than competing with it. Japanese beers and a wide cocktail selection support the food’s bold flavors, with options like the Shikoku Sunrise blending Bacardi rum, passion fruit liqueur, yuzu juice, and simple syrup for a bright, citrus-forward sip that pairs easily with sushi and grilled dishes alike.

Service reinforces the restaurant’s accessible appeal. Staff are friendly, efficient, and well-paced, with dishes arriving quickly and tables attended without interruption.

Kastsuya delivers consistency and energy, with solid food, efficient service, and a setting that feels aligned with its resort surroundings. That said, a greater sense of polish from start to finish—more nuanced pacing, elevated finishing touches, and a sharper distinction between good and exceptional moments—could further strengthen the overall impression.

As it stands, the establishment succeeds as a reliable choice for lively group dinners, casual celebrations, or an upbeat night out, supporting its 3.5-star rating while leaving clear room for refinement.
